WebGRAPELAND -- When the Houston & Great Northern Railroad was built through this area in 1872, the builders had to cut their way through, grapevines. The railroad first named this place "Grapevine." The town site, 640 acres in the John Erwin survey, was acquired by the railroad, which turned it for development to the New York & Texas Land Company.
