WebbPhilippolis is a small town situated in the Motheo and Xhariep region of the Free State Province in South Africa. In 1823 it served as a missionary outpost for the Bushman. This makes Philippolis the oldest settlement in the Free State Province. This town was named after John Philip of the London Missionary Society. WebbPhilippopolis was founded by and named after king Philip II of Macedonia in 342/341 BCE, after he had captured a fortified settlement of the Thracian Bessi on the plain of the Upper Hebros (modern Maritsa).
